Reading Cooperative Bank and The Nan Project Team up to Support Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention at Andover High School

READING, MA - Thanks to a generous grant from Reading Cooperative Bank to The Nan Project, Andover High School welcomed The Nan Project to its junior health classes on Monday November 28th and Tuesday November 29th. With a focus on mental health awareness and suicide prevention, the Nan Project works with schools to create a culture of emotional well-being through student led awareness activities and events. Nan Project Peer Mentors addressed the students and told them about their struggles with mental health and how they had found a path to recovery, emphasizing the hope and help that surrounds mental health challenges. In a follow-up message to the presenters, one AHS student wrote, “I think your project is extremely beneficial to not only people suffering from mental illness, but their friends and families, as well.”

On Friday, December 2nd, Andover High School faculty spent their Professional Development session hearing from Jon Mattleman, an expert in adolescent behavior. Mattleman talked with the teachers about the importance of emotional well-being within the school in order for students to experience academic and social/emotional success. The presentation was sponsored by The Nan Project, again through a donation awarded by Reading Cooperative Bank.

Mattleman will be back to address parents and the community on February 2nd.
