Press Release

Julieann Thurlow, President and CEO of Reading Co-operative Bank, speaks at Strategic Margins Conference

.

On Friday, May 17th, Reading Co-operative Bank’s President and CEO Julieann Thurlow participated on a panel at the Strategic Margins Conference at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel and Conference Center. The conference included a panel discussion of bankers from throughout New England who have made significant improvements to their bottom lines during a challenging earnings period for banks.

Thurlow spoke alongside Martin J. Geitz, President and CEO of Simsbury Bank in Connecticut. She discussed RCB’s unique product offerings, how traditional product lines can continue to generate revenue, and her Bank’s system of rewarding employees.

According to Thurlow, “The Federal Reserve has held rates at unsustainably low levels, causing declining profits for community banks that are offering traditional bank services and are not in the securities trading business. Traditional bankers need to be creative as maintaining profitability is the only mechanism to ensure a sustainable business.”

Optimal staffing models, deployment of cash recyclers, and modified banking roles have allowed the Bank to be creative in its branches while driving down the cost of branch delivery systems in an effort to maintain profitability. Thurlow shared other expense controls in place at RCB, and encouraged attendees to challenge sacred cows and think outside of the “banker’s box” for ways to earn income while providing superior service to customers.

Reading Co-operative Bank is a dynamic, 21st-century community bank, founded in 1886 on the principle that profit and growth go hand-in-hand with responsible banking and service to the community. They are a 5-star bank that is rated in the top 7% of banks in the country for overall financial condition by Bauer Financial. Customer Service Specialists can be reached at 781.942.5000, readingcoop.com or by visiting one of the locations in Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, Woburn and now in Andover and Burlington.
