RCB hosted a “Lessons for Life” Financial Fair for Reading Memorial High School

Reading, MA – On Thursday, June 8th, Reading Cooperative Bank teamed up with Reading Memorial High School and local volunteers to offer the class of 2018 a chance to roleplay as adults living on a budget with the “Lessons for Life” Financial Fair. These Juniors went through a simulation that underscores finance and expenses in the real world. The fair allowed students to make fiscal decisions based on their monthly income. Monthly income was determined by an assigned occupation for each student. After visiting 15 different pricing booths (like Housing, Transportation, Entertainment, etc.) and choosing how to invest their money, students sat with a financial advisor who crunched the numbers to see if they could live within their means. This was a fun exercise for students to learn basic budgeting and financial skills.

“The Financial Fair was an engaging opportunity for our students”, said Dr. John Doherty, Superintendent of Reading Public Schools. “This simulation allowed students to learn critical financial literacy skills where they had to budget their money, track their income and expenses, and determine what they would need to change if their monthly budget did not balance”, he went on to say. Doherty continued: “this experience taught our students some important real life skills which they will need for the rest of their lives. I want to thank the Reading Cooperative Bank for providing this opportunity and the countless volunteers who helped to make the Fair a complete success.”

“This was a great opportunity for the students to really see what it’s like to have to budget their money and worry about where their money is going”, said Mike Foley, High School Branch Manager. “Putting the student through a real-life simulation is a great learning tool.”
