Maria Velazquez Completes Bilingual Bank Teller Training and Joins Reading Cooperative Bank

Reading, MA –Reading Cooperative Bank (RCB) is pleased to announce that Maria Velazquez, a class standout in Lawrence Community Works’ (LCW) Bilingual Bank Teller Program, was hired by the Bank upon her completion of that program. RCB partnered with LCW to help provide training resources for the teller training program, which was sponsored by UnidosUS. Several RCB employees volunteered as guest trainers, to sit on panels and do mock interviews. Maxine Hart, Chief Human Resources Officer, Teresa Cunha, VP/Branch Administrator, Brian Downey, Reading Assistant Branch Manager, and Bryan Greenbaum, SVP/Chief Operating Officer, all participated in the program by providing support, materials and equipment.

The first training program concluded on September 27th with an 80% graduation rate. The group was composed of eight motivated women from different backgrounds – some juggling parenthood and/or a job while, at the same time, attending the training, which ran for seven weeks, Monday through Friday. While in the program, the group learned technical skills about becoming a bank teller, such as cash handling, compliance, bank products, safety and security, sales, and confidentiality. Each afternoon, they were placed into classes that helped them with resume building, interviews and job searching, as well as personal financial management. Students received a pre-and-post bank teller knowledge test with 100% of them showing an increase in bank teller knowledge by the end of the program. 75% of LCW’s students obtained jobs immediately after completing the training.

“Maria showed enthusiasm for a community bank and was excited by our mission,” said Maxine Hart. “We knew she would make for a great fit at RCB.”

The second round of bank teller training started on November 6th. For those interested in donating (three-ring binders, notebook paper, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.) or sponsoring a small graduation for this new cycle, please contact Leslie Kent, Workforce Manager, at 978-722-2638 or lkent@lawrencecommunityworks.org.
